J. Preston “Pete” Hill combined speed with power to become one of the most dominant Negro League stars from the turn of the century into the early 1920s. Hill was often compared to Ty Cobb because of his exceptional ability to steal bases and swat line drives to all fields. He was a key player on three of the Negro League’s legendary teams—the Philadelphia Giants, Leland Giants of Chicago and the Chicago American Giants—and captained the Leland team to an extraordinary 123-6 record. Hill concluded his career as player-manager of the Detroit Stars.
