Luke Appling Oil on canvas painting

Price: $2,000.00

Lucius Benjamin Appling was the Chicago White Sox shortstop for nearly 20 years.  Despite his consistency, he acquired the nickname “Old Aches and Pains” because of his constant complaining about physical ailments, the poor condition of the playing field, and salary disputes. A sturdily built leadoff batter with a keen eye, Appling was known for his ability to intentionally foul off pitches until receiving the pitch he wanted for a base hit. Legend holds that he once fouled off 17 straight pitches before hitting a triple.  Appling twice captured the American League batting title, finished with a .310 lifetime average and a career total of 2,749 hits.
