Lou Brock was the ultimate lead-off hitter during an era that was dominated by power hitters. The soft-spoken outfielder with a big smile and graceful movements revolutionized the art of base running, totaling 938 stolen bases in a 19-year career. Originally signed by the Chicago Cubs, Brock showed flashes of speed and power. But he flourished after being dealt to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1964. A dangerous left-handed batter, Brock collected more than 3,000 hits and helped lead the Cardinals to three National League pennants and two World Series championships in the 1960s.
