A durable right-hander, Jesse Haines won 210 games during his 18 years with the St. Louis Cardinals. Haines had a blazing fastball and an effective knuckleball, which allowed him to amass 20 victories on three occasions, and help the Cards win five pennants between 1926 and 1934. He was a pleasant fellow off the field, but his fiercely competitive nature resulted in tirades against teammates whose poor fielding led to a loss. He threw a no-hitter against Boston in 1924, and two years later, he defeated the Yankees twice in the World Series, tossing a shutout and the Series clincher.
