Joe “Ducky” Medwick was a member of the St. Louis Cardinals’ Gas House Gang of the 1930s.  He was a hard-charging, outspoken, all-out, superb baseball player.  Medwick was the last National Leaguer to win a triple crown, and is among the top 100 players of all time according to “The Sporting News” and the Society for Baseball Research.  There are two versions for the Medwick sobriquet.  One is that he waddled like a duck, and the other that a woman who saw him swim noted he swam like a duck.  Either one, it was a name he detested for most of his career, and led to many fights.
