Harry Heilmann is among the Tigers’ all-time leaders in every major hitting category. Purchased by the Tigers for $1,500 in 1914, Heilmann joined a prodigious outfield that included future Hall of Famers Ty Cobb and Heinie Manush. Between 1921 and 1927, he captured four American League batting titles with averages of .394, .403, .393 and .398. Heilmann was popular with fans and players alike and had a keen sense of humor. After his 17-year playing career ended, he broadcast Tigers games for another 17 years.
