It doesn’t take a village green on which to play a game of baseball.  An open lot or city playground will do. Sometimes all you needed were two players, a brick tenement wall with a chalk-drawn strike zone, a stickball bat, and a pink Spalding hi-bounce rubber ball.  This scene is somewhat autobiographical.  New York City, where I grew up, was the Mecca for baseball in the 1950s.
