George Sisler, a graceful and intelligent player, was one baseball’s greatest first basemen. Ty Cobb considered him the “nearest thing to a perfect ballplayer” because of a keen batting eye and extraordinary fielding ability. Sisler began his professional career with St. Louis Browns as a pitcher in 1915. The following year he moved to first base, hitting .305 in his first full season in the majors. Over the course of a 16-year career, Sisler won two batting titles, hitting over .400 both times, and had a 41-game hitting streak in 1922.
