One of the toughest competitors in baseball, Fred Clarke excelled both on the field and in the dugout. Signed by Louisville Colonels of the National League in 1894, the dynamic left fielder went 5-for-5 in his very first game. In 1897 he was named the Colonels’ player-manager and batted a career-high .406. As manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates he won three straight National League pennants, culminating in the first World Series in 1903. Clarke led his clubs to 14 first-place finishes.
