One of baseball’s greatest catchers of the 1930s and 1940s, Ernie Lombardi was known for his long hits and lead feet. In a 17-year career, Lombardi hit .300 or better 10 times, earned the National League MVP Award in 1938 and won batting titles in 1938 and 1942. A fine handler of pitchers, Lombardi had an outstanding throwing arm from a crouch position, rifling the ball with a sidearm release. His best years came with Cincinnati, where he helped lead the Reds to a pennant in 1939 and a world championship in 1940.
