Raised in the anthracite coalfields of northeast
Pennsylvania, Stanley Raymond Harris left the mines in 1915 to take his first
job in pro ball. In 1924, his first
season as player-manager of Washington, Harris piloted the Senators to their
first and only world championship. Known
as the “Boy Manager,” the 27-year-old second baseman led his team by example,
hitting .333 and collecting two home runs in the seven-game series against the
New York Giants. Under Harris, the
Senators captured a second straight pennant in 1925, but lost a close,
seven-game Series to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Harris also managed the Tigers, the Red Sox and the Phillies, and led
the Yankees to a world championship in 1947.
