Owner of the Indians, Browns and White Sox, Bill Veeck
did more than any other baseball mogul to entertain the fans during the
1940s. Injured in World War II, Veeck
had to have his left leg amputated, but that never quelled his enthusiasm for
fun. He consistently broke attendance
records with pennant-winning teams, outrageous door prizes, and ingenious
promotional schemes, such as Bat Day, fireworks and exploding scoreboards. As
owner of the Indians, Veeck was responsible in 1947 for signing Larry Doby, the
American League’s first African-American player, and Negro League legend
Satchel Paige in 1948.
