Widely considered the greatest umpire in baseball history, Bill Klem possessed an unshakable sense of integrity that helped to secure the reputation of umpires as honest and impartial. Klem worked a record 18 World Series as well as the first All-Star Game in 1933. Klem was also an innovator who is credited with establishing arm signals to coincide with his calls, and the inside chest protector to give him a better look at pitches. After his retirement, Klem served as chief of National League umpires until his death.
